Frequently Asked
Do I pay capital gains tax when I sell my house in Texas?
Quick Answer
Texas has no state income tax, so any tax on a home sale is generally federal. If the home was your primary residence and you owned and lived in it for at least two of the five years before selling, you can generally exclude up to $250,000 of gain ($500,000 for married couples filing jointly). Gain above the exclusion, or in situations that don't qualify, may be taxable.
